Choose the Right Size Pet Door For Your Pet
Pet doors and frames for our pet doors come in ten sizes to accommodate the smallest cat to the largest dog. We even make large size dog door! The bronzed Lexan pet door slides up and down within its own frame. Remember, for larger dogs; install the dog door 4″ – 8″ off the ground so the dog may easily step through. The frame is 4″ thick.
Important Point to consider when ordering a Solo Pet Door:
A dog door or cat door does not need to be the exact size of your pet, or larger than your pet, for your pet to fit through the pet door comfortably. But keep in mind that when your pet is young and agile, it is easy for it to maneuver through a small opening. An important issue to consider is that, as they get older, dogs in particular, can get arthritis in the back legs and hips. Be sure to choose the height of your pet door according to the pet’s needs in the future. A Solo pet door lasts for more than 15 years, so as your pet ages, a slightly larger pet door with more headroom and installed lower to the ground will make it easier for dog to enter and exit through the pet door.
To determine which dog door or cat door to order, follow these instructions:
→ Measure your pet’s width. Use a tape measure to determine the widest part of his body, typically his shoulders, just below his neck. Sometimes the hips are larger, so measure just above the back legs.
→ Measure your pet’s height. Start at the top of his shoulders and measure down to the floor. Your pet can crouch, so this is just a general guide for the height of the doggie door or cat door.
→ Practice with a cardboard model. Get a large, sturdy cardboard box. On one side, cut out a cat/dog door slightly wider than your pet’s width but shorter than his height. Place a treat in the box and see if your dog can get through the opening. Adjust the cardboard door by making it slightly larger. You can also start fresh on another side. The goal is to make the doggie door as small as possible without making it too small for your dog to successfully and safely get in and out.
→ Select a doggie door closest in size to the cardboard door, but make sure it is larger than the cardboard door, however.
IMPORTANT Frame Height Measurement:
When ordering a pet door be sure to take into consideration the overall height of the pet door frame, and not just the pet opening height. Make sure you have the clearance, especially when installing under a window or in a human door with a window. The actual height of the pet doors are TWICE as high of the pet opening. For example, Model 1812 has a pet opening of 18″ high, but the overall height of the pet door is 40″. Make sure to pay attention to the TOTAL HEIGHT of the pet door frame, and make sure there is NO WINDOW above the Pet door installation location.
IMPORTANT Frame Thickness:
Be aware the pet door frame is 4″ thick. This is important to know if installing the pet door in a human door.
When choosing extra large pet door sizes, please consider our Pet Door Intruder Alarm unit due to the increased possibility of unwanted entry. Pet Door Intruder Alarms can be ordered from the Order Pet Door page.
